What does it mean to find our way home? In this conversation with composer, conductor, and classicist Eugenia Manolidou, Ralston College explores how the living inheritance of ancient Greece, through language, music, poetry, and the pursuit of freedom, can reconnect us with the sources of self-understanding and help us recover a sense of where we come from and what we are here for.
What is the home we long to return to? Across cultures and centuries, Homer’s Odyssey speaks to something universal in human nature. Fundamentally, the journey of Odysseus serves to model our own search for where it is we come from, where we belong, and the conditions of challenge and grace that guide us to our destination. Through a discussion of ancient Greek language, music, poetry, and the enduring spirit of freedom that has characterized the Greeks for millennia, we explore the deepest sources of self-understanding, what it means to have the ancients at your fingertips, and what it takes to bring the tradition to life.
Though they may at first appear disparate, these inquiries converge on the path that returns us home, bringing us to remember who we are.
