AI and the Battle for the Soul with Iain McGilchrist — Lecture: Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Freedom

The final lecture of Ralston College’s symposium, AI and the Battle for the Soul, asks a question that turns from the future of artificial intelligence to something far older and more enduring: What does freedom require?

Weaving together neuroscience, philosophy, physics, and literature, Dr Iain McGilchrist examines free will, consciousness, and the forms of attention that compose our engagement with the world. Technological developments have confronted us with a question about the nature of the human mind, prompting us to ask what is essential if freedom, wisdom, and civilization are to endure. 

Over several decades at the intersection of philosophy and neuroscience, Dr McGilchrist’s contributions have transformed contemporary discussions of consciousness, attention, and meaning. In this lecture, he carries these same questions into an age increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence. At a moment so often dominated by mechanical explanations and computational models, he emphasizes the indispensable role of openness, receptivity, and participation in understanding, arguing that reality exceeds reductionist accounts. 

By moving through quantum physics and the problem of free will to education, totalitarianism, and the symbolic imagination, Dr McGilchrist argues that technological progress alone can never ensure human flourishing. When we mistake power for wisdom or scientific achievement for genuine understanding, we ultimately risk the very habits of thought and perception upon which truth,freedom, and human flourishing depend.
