GENERAL POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION SUMMARY
The Professor of Greek teaches Ancient Greek within Ralston College’s immersive liberal arts curriculum. Rooted in the conviction that language study opens a direct path into the intellectual and imaginative inheritance of the Western tradition, instruction unites rigorous engagement with primary texts and a living, spoken practice of Ancient Greek used for teaching, dialogue, and shared inquiry.
Beyond the classroom, the Professor participates fully in the scholarly and communal life of the College, contributing to the cultivation of a vibrant intellectual community ordered toward truth, beauty, and human flourishing. In teaching, mentorship, scholarship, and institutional service, the Professor helps advance Ralston’s mission to revive and reinvent the traditional university through serious study of the humanities and the formation of free and thoughtful persons.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Teaching & Academic Instruction:
- Teach Ancient Greek language and literature to MA students using immersive, spoken-language pedagogy.
- Conduct instruction fully in Ancient Greek and employ the Greek system of pronunciation across historical periods.
- Design and deliver rigorous coursework grounded in sustained reading of primary texts from the classical and broader Greek traditions.
- Foster habits of attentive reading, disciplined thought, and humane conversation among students.
- Assess student learning and provide sustained academic mentorship and advising.
- Participate in a two-month Greek language residency program in Greece, including residential teaching and scholarly community life.
Scholarship & Intellectual Contribution:
- Maintain active research, writing, translation, or other scholarly engagement in Greek language, literature, philosophy, theology, or related disciplines.
- Contribute to the intellectual culture of the College through lectures, seminars, tutorials, and public programming.
- Demonstrate broad knowledge of the Western canon, with particular strength desirable in post-classical, Christian, or Byzantine Greek traditions.
- Participate in ongoing conversations concerning the meaning, transmission, and renewal of the humanities in contemporary life.
Institutional Service & Community Participation:
- Support curricular development and the growth of the academic program.
- Participate in faculty activity, admissions engagement, and institutional initiatives as assigned.
- Contribute to the formation of a collegiate community marked by friendship, hospitality, and shared devotion to learning.
- Represent the mission and values of Ralston College in scholarly, civic, and public settings.
POSITION SPECIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
- Ph.D. in Classics, Greek, or a closely related field required; equivalent training and experience considered for appointment at lecturer or instructor rank.
- Demonstrated fluency in spoken Ancient Greek and ability to teach entirely in Greek, or clear commitment to acquiring this capability rapidly.
- Willingness to employ the Greek pronunciation system for all periods of Greek.
- Strong knowledge of the Western canon.
Desirable qualifications include:
- Active command of Latin.
- Knowledge of Modern Greek and/or Italian.
- Research expertise in post-classical, Christian, or Byzantine Greek.
- Evidence of effective undergraduate or graduate teaching.
- Capacity to contribute meaningfully to the academic and institutional development of a growing liberal arts college.

- Much of the work of this position is completed while sitting at a desk, using a computer and phone. Requires talking, hearing and visual acuity sufficient to perform these major functions.
- Occasionally includes reaching above shoulder heights, below the waist or lifting up to 25 pounds for office equipment, supplies and materials.

- A piece of original writing composed in Ancient Greek of at least one page
Materials should be sent to Professor Joseph Conlon at employment@ralston.ac at the earliest convenience. Letters of recommendation and additional supporting materials will be requested following the initial interview. A portion of the interview process will be conducted in Ancient Greek.
Review of applications will begin on February 16th and continue until the position is filled. The successful candidate will be expected to begin employment no later than June 15th, 2026.
